The INC was founded on 6 February 1974 by the current President, Seán McManus. The INC describes itself as a "human rights organisation dedicated to getting the United States to stand up for justice and peace in Ireland" (introduction to web site). It acts as an umbrella group which represents most of the Irish-American groups in the United States. In addition to political groups it also represents such organisations as the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and the American Ancient Order of Hibernians (AAOH). In 1978 the INC sent an inquiry team to Northern Ireland and later recommended that a 'peace forum' should be held on Northern Ireland in Washington, America. The INC has been active in campaigning for American companies operating in Northern Ireland to adopt the 'MacBride Principles' in an effort to improve the representation of Catholics in the region's workforce.
