The University of Ulster (UU) is one of two universities in Northern Ireland. Staff at the UU have carried out a wide range of research on various aspects of the Northern Ireland conflict. The UU also houses a number of specific research centres and projects which have 'the Troubles' as their focus. The most important of these being the Centre for the Study of Conflict (CSC) and the Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity (INCORE). The UU was founded in 1968 by the merger of the then New University of Ulster (NUU) together with Jordanstown Polytechnic, the Belfast College of Art and Design, and Magee College. The decision to site the NUU in Coleraine (a mainly Protestant town) instead of Derry (a mainly Catholic city) caused political controversy during the early period of the Civil Rights movement.
