The 2016 Referendum on the European Union

The following are the results of the 2016 EU Referendum held in Northern Ireland and other regions of the UK, on Thursday 23 June 2016.

Introduction

On 23 June 2016 there was a referendum across the whole of the UK, on whether or not the UK should remain a member of the EU.

The question on the referendum ballot paper was:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union
or leave the European Union?
Remain a member of the European Union
      Leave the European Union

Of the major political parties in Northern Ireland, only the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) supported a vote to leave the EU (two minor parties also supported leave: Traditional Unionist Voice, TUV, and People Before Profit Alliance, PBP). The other parties supported the campaign to remain in the EU. Northern Ireland was in the unique position of having a land border between the UK and the EU. There was some argument about whether or not border controls would have to be re-introduced if there was a vote to leave the EU.
